Nha Nhim: A Homestay Built from Upcycled Materials in Da Lat, Viet Nam

Transforming Waste into a Unique Architectural Masterpiece

The inspiration for Nha Nhim Homestay came during the design team's field trips to Da Lat, where they discovered the abundance of waste materials in the area. Determined to give these materials a second chance, the architects collected and upcycled them into various components of the homestay. For example, waste materials from local textile factories were repurposed into different parts, while external wood cells found new life in ceiling modules and fences were crafted from tree branches.

What sets Nha Nhim Homestay apart is not just its sustainable construction, but also its unique location. Situated on a slope in a mountainous area, the homestay offers breathtaking views of the surrounding deserted scenery. The project embodies the architect's adventure of creating something meaningful from what others consider trash.

The realization of Nha Nhim Homestay involved the use of barks, branches, and test concrete blocks. These materials were transformed and given new life, showcasing the ingenuity and technical expertise of the design team.

With a site area of 290m2 and a total build-up area of 232m2, Nha Nhim Homestay seamlessly integrates into its natural surroundings. The design team carefully considered the technical specifications, ensuring a floor area ratio of 0.8 and a total site coverage of 59.7%.

The homestay's interaction with its environment was a crucial aspect of the design. Da Lat's cold climate presented a challenge that the architects successfully addressed by creating a large slope roof to shield the interior from cold winds at night while allowing cool breezes to flow in during the day. Additionally, the project was divided into several small elements to maximize ventilation, natural sunlight, and reduce the need for artificial energy, minimizing harm to the environment.

Throughout the design process, the architects maintained a strong connection to the local context. Traditional materials were used to ensure harmony with the surroundings, while the elevation of the entire structure expanded the living space, created green areas, and provided circulation space in the narrow site. This elevation also opened up panoramic views of the valley, unobstructed by neighboring buildings.

Overcoming challenges such as the narrow site and undulating terrain, the design team's creativity and technical expertise resulted in the realization of Nha Nhim Homestay. This architectural masterpiece stands as a testament to the potential of upcycled materials and sustainable design.

Nha Nhim Homestay was constructed and began operation in 2017 in Da Lat, Viet Nam. The project received the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2021. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life.
